GEOGRAPHY

(a). General Location:- Mylliem Block is located in the Western  slopes of Shillong Peak, the highest Peak of Meghalaya. It lies at an Elevation of 1800 metres above sea level.

(b). Location on the map:- The Headquarter of the Mylliem Development Block is located in the B/3 Grid of the Survey Of India map of  Topo Sheet Number 78o/14 printed and published by the Surveyor General of India (First Edition) in the scale 1:50,000 or 1 inch = 5 Kms. (Block map enclosed).

(c). Area:- The approximate area under the jurisdiction of the Block Office as per statistical records available is about 19,243 Hectares.

(d). Boundary:- The Area, which includes within the administration and jurisdiction of the Block, is bounded in the North by Umsning Development Block, in the East by Mawryngkneng Development Block including Shillong City. In the South by Laitkor-Khatarshnong Development Block, while in the West by the Mawphlang Development Block.

(e). Topography:- Undulating hills and valleys covers the area in question. The highest point being the Shillong Peak or "U Lum Shillong" ( under Umsaw Circle) having an altitude of 1964 m.s.l, while the lowest point is in and around Umprew village ( under Mawtawar Circle) having an altitude of 800 m.s.l. Basically the area is somewhat circular in appearance.

(f). Soil:- The soil type of area around the Block varies from dark brown to dark reddish-brown in colour and depth varies from 50 to 200 cm. Texture varies from loamy to fine loamy in the low lying areas while in the upper reaches it is sandy.

             The Soils are rich in organic carbon with high nitrogen supplying potential, but deficient in phosphorous and potassium. Soil reaction varies from acidic (pH 5.0 to 6.0) to strongly acidic ( pH 4.5 to 5.0)

(g). Rock Types:- The Rock types of the area belong to the Precambrian. The area falls under "Shillong Groups of Rocks" which is mostly Quartzites. There is a pre dominance of Plutons in the Southern Portion  of the area which are geographically referred to as "Mylliem Granite".

(h). Rivers and Lakes:- The Wah Umiam mostly drains the area  forming the most important river of the area. It originate somewhere near the watersheds near the "Sohiong" village. It forms one of the prominent feeders of the "Umiam Hydel Reservoir". Other tributaries of this river are the Umshyrpi Stream originating from the Shillong Peak Water Shed,Umkhrah Stream, which is known as the Umkhen in the upper reaches also originates from the Shillong Peak Water Shed. Wah Umkhrah & Umshyrpi confluences at the vicinity of "Bishop Bedon Falls and flow on as the Wah Rho till it meets the Wah Umiam.

           The Shillong Peak Water Shed Forms the water divide the area giving rise to the above mention streams which flows in the Northerly direction. Streams that flows South of Shillong Peak at Umiew River, which is the main drainage river of the southern slopes of the Shillong Peak Water Shed.

(i). Wasteland:- It has a vast wasteland by the riverside of Umiam and Shilliangum area.
